According to legend, Hephaestus was born from Zeus and Hera, Hera was so angry that Hephaestus was so ugly that she threw him off Mt. Olympus, causing him to break his back. Zeus felt bad for his son so he made him immortal and brought him back from his exile from Mt. Olympus. After he was made immortal he stayed in Mt. Olympus and was the smith for the gods.
